What Is GEO? How Charleston Businesses Get Recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI
Short answer: Generative engine optimization, or GEO, is the practice of making your website and online listings easy for AI tools like ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Perplexity to find, understand and recommend. It builds on SEO. It doesn’t replace it.
A few years ago, a Charleston homeowner who needed a painter typed “painters near me” into Google and clicked around. Today that same person might ask ChatGPT, “Who’s a good painting contractor in Charleston that does historic homes?” and get one short, confident answer.
If your business isn’t in that answer, that customer never sees you. That’s the problem GEO solves.
What GEO actually means
GEO stands for generative engine optimization. You’ll also hear it called AI SEO or answer engine optimization. The names vary because the industry hasn’t settled on one. The goal is the same: get your business named and cited when an AI tool writes an answer.
Traditional SEO is about earning a spot in a list of links. GEO is about being one of the few sources an AI pulls from when it writes a response. There is no position #1 in ChatGPT. You’re either part of the answer or you’re not.
I’ve been through this kind of shift before
I’ve been doing digital marketing for about 27 years, back to when I was beta testing Google in the 1990s. I watched businesses panic when search engines replaced directories, and again when social media took over. Every time, the businesses that adapted early did well, and the ones that waited had to catch up.
AI search is the next one. The good news is that most of what works is solid, boring marketing fundamentals done carefully.
GEO and SEO: how they fit together
• SEO gets your pages found and ranked in Google and Bing.
• GEO makes sure the AI tools can read your content, trust it and quote it.
• Both reward clear, accurate content from a business that’s clearly real and local.
If your SEO foundation is weak, GEO is hard. If your SEO is solid, GEO is mostly about making things clearer for machines.
6 steps Charleston businesses can take now
1. Keep your Google Business Profile complete and active. Add services, photos and hours, post regularly, and answer every review. For local questions, this is one of the first places AI tools look.
2. Answer real customer questions on your website. Write pages and short FAQs that answer the exact things customers ask you on the phone, such as “How much does it cost?” and “Do you serve Mount Pleasant?”
3. Be specific about where you work. Name Charleston, North Charleston, Mount Pleasant, Summerville, Goose Creek and Moncks Corner when you serve them. Vague copy gives AI nothing to repeat.
4. Let AI crawlers in. Some website security settings and robots.txt files block AI bots without the owner knowing. Ask your web person to check.
5. Add structured data (schema). This is code that tells machines your business name, address, services and hours in a format they can’t misread. I explain it in plain English in a later post.
6. Build real mentions. Reviews, local directories, chamber and BBB listings, and local press all tell AI tools your business is legitimate.
Test it yourself in 10 minutes
Open ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. Ask the questions a customer would ask, such as “best [your service] in [your town].” Write down who gets named and which sources get cited. That list shows you what to work on first.

FAQ
Is GEO the same as SEO? No. SEO focuses on ranking in search results. GEO focuses on being cited in AI-written answers. They overlap heavily, and good SEO is the base for good GEO.
Do small local businesses really need GEO? If customers in your area ask AI tools for recommendations, yes. Local service businesses are some of the first to feel this shift.
How long does GEO take to work? There’s no guaranteed timeline, and I’d be wary of anyone who promises one. Improvements to your website and listings can start showing up within weeks to months.
Can I do GEO myself? Yes, steps 1 through 3 above are a good start. Technical pieces like schema and crawler settings are easier with a professional.
